Alaska State Ferry System: Unique among American transportation systems are the state-run ships in Alaska. This fold-out brochure from 1963 promotes the ferries as a tourist destination and an unusual way to see the spectacular Inner Passage. Besides a big route map and destination info, there are four ship photos. One shows an unidentified ferry with handsome 1960s looks. Interior views show a cafeteria-style dining room, an observation lounge with padded benches, and a cabin decked out in plaids. Although not mentioned by name, three newly launched motorships took over this service in 1963 - TAKU, MALASPINA, and MATANUSKA. Fifty years later the ships are still sailing the route along with newer sisters. The brochure is in very good condition.
