Various Lines: "The Ports of Hamburg" by Edwin J. Clapp, first published in 1911. This version is from the 3rd printing in 1918 by the Yale University Press. "This book was written with the conviction that the muc-needed modernization of our ocean and Great Lakes terminals must be along the lines followed in Hamburg," states the preface, "and that river transportation in America ... must be modeled on that of the great German streams, the Elbe and Rhine." The book is surprisingly readable and also discusses the great German passenger lines of the era and shipbuilders. Many vintage b&w photos, and a fold-out map of Hamburg harbor in back. 220 pages and in very good condition.
