MEDIA/ PARTHIA
Walter Thomas agency portrait

MEDIA/ PARTHIA<br>Walter Thomas agency portrait
Cunard Line: A travel agency print of Cunard's first new passenger ships after WW2, MEDIA and PARTHIA. The sisters carried freight and 250 passengers in First Class splendor that rivaled the QUEENS. Celebrities avoiding the spotlight often traveled on the pair. This portrait by famed maritime artist Walter Thomas (1894 - 1971) shows the combo ship sailing through sparkling turquoise seas with passengers enjoying the sun on deck. Thank God it wasn't a rough day. Captain Harry Arnott wrote in "Captain of the QUEEN" that the ships "tended to roll and pitch around the Atlantic like a couple of sick sea horses." Stabilizers eventually steadied the MEDIA but they were not fitted on PARTHIA. Arnott comments that the ship "was one of the most violently unstable ships ever to cross the Atlantic." The vessels were not financial successes and Cunard sold them in 1961. The print shows some yellowing in the border and the frame has a few small nicks. Otherwise very good condition. 22" by 32".
