Italian Line: A travel agency standee featuring an ad from "The New Yorker" magazine promoting Caribbean cruises aboard the MICHELANGELO, RAFFAELLO, and LEONARDO DA VINCI. The text promotes "the exuberant friendliness of the Italian people" and "fun filled decks". Although undated, this agency item is from the late 1960s/early 1970s. This was the era that these big ships often crossed the Atlantic with more crew than passengers and the line was trying to increase revenue with cruising. However, the rigid 3 class design built into these ships made them hard to convert for one class cruises. By the mid-1970s it would all fall apart when the Italian government withdrew its big subsidy. This standee measures 9 +" by 13". It has a little wear around the edges but the cardboard leg on back has never been unfolded.
