French Line: The DE GRASSE served for many years as CGT's Cabin Class liner crossing the Atlantic. In the 1920s she carried 399 in Cabin Class and 1,712 in Third. A 1932 retrofit brought into the times with 563 in Cabin Class and 410 in Tourist. During the war she served as an accommodation ship for the Germans, who of course sunk her when they departed Bordeaux. But after the war CGT raised the ship and fixed her up for further transatlantic work. Canadian Pacific bought the DE GRASSE in 1953 and renamed her EMPRESS OF AUSTRALIA. When CP's new ships came on line the EMPRESS was sold to Sicula Oceanica to become the VENEZUELA. A rock off Cannes ended her career in 1962. This line issued unused postcard shows her with her pre-war two funnel guise.
