SOVEREIGN Class: 1988
Dawn of Mega Ships

SOVEREIGN Class: 1988<br>Dawn of Mega Ships
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line: A collection of eight items relating to the groundbreaking SOVEREIGN Class of ships. The first is a 28 page pre-maiden voyage brochure for the SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, a ship that helped usher in the mega-ship era. This brochure was printed in March 1987, almost a year before the ship's January '88 inaugural cruise. Inside are dramatic renderings of interior spaces. They may ho-hum today, but how dramatic they seemed back then! In the center was "The Centrum", a five deck tall lobby with waterfalls, a grand piano, glass elevators, shops, bars, and all the rest of the trappings we find today. Other rendering show the Windjammer Cafe, Music Man Lounge, Boutiques of the Centrum, and Serenade Island piano bar. A fold-out reveals a 24" ship cut-away with sample cabin lay-outs and 12 decks of plans on the other side. Also included in this collection is an elegant invitation for dinner onboard the second ship of the class, MONARCH OF THE SEAS, during her maiden arrival in New York. I've tossed in a postcard with a SOVEREIGN Class ship surrounded by RCCL destinations. There is a 24 page reprint from "Travel Trade" of an interview with RCCL's boss and his vision for the future of cruising. That future is today, so read this to see if his crystal ball was in tune. Finally, four items from that era but unidentified as to ship: cabin service menu, bar menu, cabin door "make up room" tag, and a vinyl documents holder. Today the MONARCH and third sister MAJESTY OF THE SEAS still sail for Royal Caribbean, although they are now considered quaint. The initial ship now sails as SOVEREIGN for Spanish subsidiary Pullmantur. All the items in this collection are in excellent condition.
