Eastern Steamship Lines: A 46 page "Vacation Cruise-Tours" brochure for the 1940 season. The tours all departed from New York, usually on the NEW YORK or BOSTON. Several sailed up into the Canadian Maritimes while others landed passengers and loaded them onto buses for drives through the White Mountains, or over to New York lakes, or through historic cities. Many of the Northeast's grand hotels are shown as well as sites such as Nova Scotia's Peggy's Cove, New Hampshire's Franconia Notch, and Boston's Faneuil Hall. The SAINT JOHN is mentioned briefly. The season of 1940 was about the end for the old Eastern Steamship Lines. Auto tours were taking over, and when the U.S. Government took over the fleet Eastern was probably glad to be rid of the money-losing ships. The NEW YORK and BOSTON were sold to Great Britain and became part of the ill-fated "Mosquito Convoy" where a fleet of coastal steamers attempted to make the crossing. Both vessels were torpedoed and sunk. Survivors were picked up by other ships, which in turn were torpedoed and sunk. Other than a water stain on the cover, this brochure is in excellent condition.
