Costa Line: A quiz for you ship buffs: what ship debuted the same year as the AQUITANIA and IMPERATOR and until recently still sailed the world's oceans? Yup, the Christian missionary ship M.V. DOULOS which is now docked in Singapore waiting a future use. She started off in 1914 as Mallory Line's MEDINA. After WW2 she was rebuilt into the immigrant ship ROMA. At age 38 in 1952, when most of her contemporaries had long since been scrapped, Costa bought her and rebuilt the ship as the FRANCA C for South American service. In 1959 they rebuilt the ship again for cruise service. That is the ship you will see in this collection of two items from 1959. The first is a large (22" by 25") tissue deck plan. Six decks are shown in satisfying detail. Among her many advancements were private baths for ever cabin and ample Sun Deck space for passengers. The second item is a fold-out brochure announcing her November 7, 1959 maiden cruise from Fort Lauderdale. Along with rates and itineraries, there are four interior photos. Famed Italian designer Nino Zoncada created the Italian modern interiors and filled them with artwork. You get a glimpse of Marcello Mascherini's bronze sculpture in the Main Lounge. Other photos show the Dining Room, Gift Shop, and a cabin. The deck plan shows a little discoloration on a fold, otherwise both items are in excellent condition.
