QUEEN ELIZABETH: 1940<br>The elegant Kains '54
Cunard Line: Mr. & Mrs. Samuel K. Kain, folks so obviously important that their names are penned elegant across their portrait Farewell Dinner menu, sailed westbound on the QUEEN ELIZABETH in late August of 1954. Perhaps they taken the waters in Baden-Baden or soaked up the sun on the Riviera and were returning for the fall season at the Met. They saved from their voyage a log abstract which showed they savored a fine voyage at a speedy 28.14 knots with Captain R.G. Thelwell in charge. A luncheon menu from August 26 and a dinner menu from August 28 showed they sailed First Class. Of special interest is the slightly battered Farewell Dinner menu. Besides the oh-so-fancy scriptwork on front, on back are the signatures of their tablemates: Elizabeth Schneider and John Muir of New York, Arthur Hopper of Plainfield, NJ, Ida Mae Rude of Fresno, California, plus Guy and Ann Cusack of Johannesburg, South Africa. The (relative) important of the Kains is shown by the final signature - that of Staff Chief Engineer Arthur Campbell. While dining at the Staff Chief Engineer's table might not be as prestigious as dining at the Captain's table, it certainly must have ranked higher than, say, the Chief Medical Officer's table. These 4 items are in fair to good condition.
