United States Lines: Most of the fittings on the UNITED STATES were custom made for the ship. From furniture to handrails, each item was a unique design that represented the industrial strength of mid-century America. Take this double prong robe hook. It is simple and elegant looking yet strong and useful. A metal mounting bracket attaches with a set screw into the tapered aluminum shaft while the backing plate hides the screw holes. A carefully rounded "u" shaped hook fits into the end of the shaft. These hooks were found in staterooms throughout the ship. Leon Jackson, founder of Nautiques, was far-sighted enough to remove these hooks during his many scavenger hunts through the SSUS in the 1980s. 3 3/4" long and 3 1/4" wide.
