DRESDEN: 1927<br>Cabin plan '28
NDL: A 28" by 34" fold-out tissue deck plan marked "Preliminary Plan", undated, but most likely from 1927 when the ship rejoined the NDL fleet. The legends on the plan are mostly handwritten indicating this was an early sample. The ship was built as the ZEPPELIN for NDL in 1915 but was laid up because of the war. Afterwards the ship was handed over to the British and she became Orient Line's ORMUZ. But in 1927 NDL bought her back and renamed the ship DRESDEN. By time this plan was printed her huge steerage capacity was cut way back and she carried 399 in Cabin, 288 in Tourist, and 284 in Third. This ship was more utilitarian in nature than luxurious and it shows with smallish public rooms and lots of cabins. And while a few had shared baths, no cabin had private facilities. The fate of the DRESDEN was as dramatic as the horrors which were to befall her namesake city a decade later. While on a Norwegian cruise during June, 1934, the ship ran aground and was badly holed. A Danish steamer rescued all 1,000 passengers and most of the crew. The next day the ship capsized in shallow water and was a total loss. The photos of the sideways ship are very dramatic. This plan is in very good condition with only a few holes at the folds to detract.
