AMERICAN LANCER: 1968<br>Container pioneer
United States Lines: A smoked glass ashtray in a rounded triangular shape. The USL name is at bottom and the image shows the AMERICAN LANCER pierside with a big crane loading containers. The advent of containers was big news in the 1960s and the eight ship LANCER Class was USL's first container newbuildings. Each ship held 1,240 containers, a large number for 1968, and could operate at 25 knots. While the company dropped passenger service in 1969, these were heady times for USL's growing container fleet. Larger ships arrived in the 1970s and 1980s but fierce competition and a misstep with too slow ships forced the line into bankruptcy in 1986. This 6 1/2" ashtray has a name scratched into the top that I cannot decipher. Perhaps a former crew member? Other than that it is in very good condition.
