LEVIATHAN: 1917
BIG 1st Class

LEVIATHAN: 1917<br>BIG 1st Class
United States Lines: A large First Class measuring 37" by 46". There is no date, but the chi-chi Club Leviathan shows up on Promenade Deck, real estate once occupied by the elegant but stuffy Palm Court and Ritz-Carlton Restaurant. The Club Leviathan was mannered after a supper club and featured dining, dancing, and even movies. First Class passengers had a full array of grand public rooms along Promenade Deck, from the afore mentioned Art Deco inspired club to the Grand Salon, Library, and Card Room. An unusual feature of this plan is that deck chair locations are mapped on the surrounding open decks. This vast stretch of public rooms predates the design of later ships known for their lavish use of space such as the NORMANDIE. However, one odd feature stands out. Fitted into odd corners on this deck are a few cabins. While it might have been nice to be close to the action, the male occupants of bathroom-less Cabin 8, for example, would have had to troop out directly in front of a main stairway to reach the loo. Female occupants not only had to brave running into acquaintances on the stairway, they had to cross the Library to find relief. The majority of First Class passengers bedded down on A, B, and C decks where there were a large selection of accommodations, from single-bed inside cabins to grand outside suites. B and C decks also had an extravagantly large lobbies, another feature reminiscent of the later NORMANDIE. The elegant Dining Salon filled a big chuck of D Deck. The ship looks huge! The plan is in very good condition with just a little bit of seam separation to detract.
