MAASDAM/ RYNDAM: 1951<br>Pre-maiden '52
Holland America Line: A 16 page deck plan from 1952 when these two sisters made a big splash in the shipping world. Unlike most transatlantic ships of the era, the RYNDAM/MAASDAM carried only 39 in a tiny First Class while the rest of the ship was given over to 840+ Tourist Class passengers. The concept proved popular and led the way for later ships such as the STATENDAM and Cunard's SAXONIA sisters. This particular deck plan is dated January 1952, six months after the RYNDAM's maiden voyage and six months before the first voyage of the still uncompleted MAASDAM. There is a big four panel photo of the RYNDAM, and 12 b&w interior photos showing off a stylish, fun design. Just in case a potential passenger didn't get the point of these ships, the slogan "A New Concept in Tourist Travel" is emblazon on the first pages while in the back is both a cross-section and plain view of the ship with "TOURIST" spelled out to show how much space the lesser class had. In contrast, the small First Class area on Boat Deck looks like a prison. While these ships started off popular, by the early 1960s their passenger loads had dropped way off. Holland America made one big mistake when designing the ships - none, zero, zip of the Tourist Class cabins had private facilities. That made them unsuitable for most cruises and unpopular for crossing. By 1968 both were out of the fleet. This plan from their early days is in excellent condition.
