Orient Overseas Line: It is heart breaking to look at these three promotional items created for the ill-fated SEAWISE UNIVERSITY: fold-out deck plan, rate brochure, and an early sailing guide that was way too optimistic. Hong Kong shipping magnate C.Y. Tung had a great idea to convert the largest ship in the world, Cunard's fabled QUEEN ELIZABETH of 1940, into both a floating university and a cruise ship that would sail the world. Cruise passengers could enjoy the destination lectures provided to the students while still enjoying all the luxury of a QUEEN. The detailed deck plan covers 10 decks from Sports down to the pool on E. The plan is lifted directly from Cunard. The 1971 fall fares and schedule brochure must have been printed immediately after C.Y. bought the ship in late 1970 before any of her multiple mechanical problems were discovered. The schedule calls for her maiden cruise around the world to begin from Los Angeles on September 3. Not a chance. Instead the ship was moored in Hong Kong Harbor on that date, only half finished. The second brochure announces her "Circle Pacific Cruise" which was to be a shake-down voyage without students. There is an extensive rate list and sailing itinerary. On January 9, 1972 retrofitting of the ship in Hong Kong Harbor was within days of completion when mysterious fires broke out all over. The ship burned for two days and finally capsized as a molten pile of twisted steel. Like the Kennedy assassination and 9/11, ship buffs all over the world remember where they were when they heard the devastating news of the QUEEN ELIZABETH's destruction. All three rare items are in excellent condition. Supply your own Kleenex.
