NDL: In this peaceful 1907 view the BREMEN, part of the large "Barbarossa Class" of ships, is seen entering the ship canal at Bremenhaven. But seven years earlier, on June 30, 1900, the ship was caught in the horrific fire at the NDL pier in Hoboken. A bale of cottom caught fire and quickly the entire pier and all the ships tied to it were ablaze. Brave tugboat men pulled the ships away from the pier. The BREMEN was severely damaged and 12 lost their lives onboard. Altogether 300 were killed. The ship was rebuilt and sailed into the 1920s. This card was posted in 1907.
