United States Lines: A commemorative ashtray from the launching of the PIONEER MOON, a speedy break-bulk freighter launched by the Newport News Shipyard on April 27, 1962. The ship was said to have exceptionally fine lines and could cruise at 24 knots. Unfortunately her slender bow and stern areas, while advantageous for speed, limited her cargo carrying capabilities, especially when containerization took hold. In 1971 USL chartered the ship long term to the Military Sealift Command. This 7" square ashtray contains a color portrait of the ship along with launch information. Other than a little wear to the gold rim, it is in excellent condition.
