CORNELIUS G. KOLFF:
Life ring

CORNELIUS G. KOLFF:<br>Life ring
Staten Island Ferry: An original life ring from the CORNELIUS G. KOLFF which operated on the famous route from Whitehall Street at the tip of Manhattan to St. George on Staten island. The 269' double ended ferry could hold almost 3,000 people and operated from 1951 to 1987. Later she was converted into, of all things, a floating prison dormitory before finally being scrapped in 2003. This life ring from early in her career measures 30" in diameter and is in good condition but with some nicks and scraps from years of use. Early photos show a life ring such as this one up on the bridge wing, although there must have been others spread around the vessel. A rare piece of New York history!
