AUGUSTUS: 1952<br>Time capsule
Italian Line: A quiz for you ship buffs - what famed 55-year-old transatlantic liner is hidden away like a time capsule, awaiting rediscovery? Of course you knew it was the AUGUSTUS, one of the first new Italian Line ships built after WW2. According to the Maritime Matters web site, "The famed but tragic ANDREA DORIA and an entire generation of ocean liners, not only from Italy but worldwide, would draw inspiration from her trendsetting profile." The AUGUSTUS sailed the Genoa - Buenos Aires route but was familiar to New Yorkers as a DORIA replacement until the new LEONARDO DA VINCI entered service. After being retired from the Italian Line fleet in 1976 the ship was sold to interests in Asia where she been moored every since. For a short time the ship became the hotel but since 2000 she has been tied to a pier in Manila awaiting reuse. Peter Knego and Martin Cox took a tour of the ship (http://www.maritimematters.com/augustus1.html) and their wonderful web site spread shows that her lovely mid-century modern interiors are still intact With the QE2 heading for retirement, the ROTTERDAM successfully restored, and the WINDOSR CASTLE and FRANCE/NORWAY lost, wouldn't it be great to save this important piece of Italian maritime history? This line issued postcard is unused.
