Ship History: Howard Chandler Christy (1873-1952) was well known at the turn of the 20th century for his illustrations in magazines such as Harper's, Scribner's, and Leslie's Weekly. He developed a popular figured called "the Christy Girl", a pretty young thing usually surrounded by admiring men. His famous poster of a young woman dressed in a sailors uniform with the caption, ôIf I were a man, I would join the Navyö, is a WW1 classic. This illustration is from a folio of his works which were popular around 1900. It shows well dressed passengers on an un-named ocean liner. My guess is that it shows the ship arriving as the passengers are bent over the railing as if searching for a familiar face in the crowd. Also, there are no bon voyage streamers indicating a departure. 11" by 16 1/2" and in excellent condition.
