GEORGE WASHINGTON: 1909
Two wars

GEORGE WASHINGTON: 1909<br>Two wars
United States Lines: A tale of two wars: The seized Germany liner GEORGE WASHINGTON served as an American troopship throughout WW1. She was a big and comfortable liner, and so U.S. President Woodrow Wilson chose the ship to carry him to the Versailles Peace Conference in 1918. The first item in this small collection, an unused photocard, shows her flying the President's flag. The next item is a faded aerial photo of the ship. Although it is difficult to see, the ship is dressed out in her war-time gray livery. On the back is the stamp of the U.S. Naval Air Station along with this warning: "OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH - NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BY ORDER OF THE DIRECTOR OF NAVAL AVIATION." The final item is another photocard showing the ship in her original North German Lloyd livery, although an American flag has been tactfully added to her stern. On front, along with her name, is "The ship that brought me home." This card was posted in 1919 by "Clark" who wrote, "Dear Sis, Was out at Coney Island last nite seeing the sights. Had a pretty good time but I don't think much of N.Y. We parade here tomorrow and then go to Quantico VA. Expect to be discharged sometime next week. I am coming to see you soon." In the 1920s the ship sailed for USL and there was a stillborn effort to rebuild her into a worthy companion to the LEVIATHAN. During the Depression she was sent to the Patuxent River lay-up where several other old German liners were rusting away. But the GEORGE WASHINGTON was in good enough condition that she was reactivated again as a troop ship for WW2.
