AMERICAN MILLER
Rescue award

AMERICAN MILLER<br>Rescue award
USL: An impressive "Award for Distinguished Service" bestowed upon Captain William R. Wight, master of the United States Lines' C-2 freighter AMERICAN MILLER. The beautifully hand lettered proclamation reads, "In recognition of his direction of the heroic rescue and transfer at sea during exceptionally adverse weather conditions on November 17, 1955, of two seriously injured seamen of the Italian S.S. DEA MAZZELLA." It is signed by New York Mayor Robert Wagner and the commissioner of the Department of Marine and Aviation whose signature I can not make out. The award was presented on January 20, 1956 and features the seal of the City of New York along with the flag of the Marine and Aviation department. The proclamtion measures 19" by 23" and comes with the original wooden frame. The glass and matting need to be reattached to the frame, otherwise everything is in very good condition. I can not find out anything else about this resuce, but it yielded a very impressive document.
