Hamburg American Line: A 34 page brochure printed in French on textured stock to promote the MILWAUKKE's Mediterranean cruises in 1936. There is lots of bold b&w photography of destinations, and the fun is searching the background as the ship appears in several, sort of like a "Where's Waldo" for ship buffs. There is a handsome full page photo taken from a village hillside looking down to the ship anchored in a Mediterranean harbor and in another pic the ship is peaking out from behind rocks in Funchal. Each of the five cruises has a route map, itineraries, extra-tariff tours, and several pages of beautiful b&w photography. The Germans really knew how to create striking brochures in the 1930s. In the back are five pages dedicated to the ship and cruise rates. There is a portrait of the white hulled MILWAUKEE in Hamburg Harbor, and interior photos of her posh Grand Hall, over-stuffed Salon, a simple cabin, and the outdoor canvas pool protected from the wind by, all of things, zebra-patterned sheets. Or perhaps it is camouflage put onboard in preparation for war? There is extensive description of the ship in French and on the back cover are three sample menus. The brochure is in very good condition. The MILWAUKEE became an accommodation ship during the war and then taken by the British as a war prize. A fire in 1946 during a retrofit destroyed her.
