American Line: This stamped brass ashtray has a filigree handle with a cloisonnT emblem featuring the houseflag and ship name. The base features a design of a crane with the sea and sun in the background. 3" in diameter. Good condition except that one side of the handle has come loose. This souvenir represents this ship during one brief period in her long life. The ship first sailed for Pacific Mail Steamship before being transferred to Atlantic Transport. Then she was transferred to fellow IMM partner American Line in December 1919 for Hamburg to New York service. That is the era that this ashtray comes from. In 1923 the ship was given over to Panama Pacific. In 1929 she joined the Dollar Steamship Company as the PRESIDENT JOHNSON. After many more years of service she was sold out of the fleet when American President Line bought out Dollar. She continued sailing for several smaller companies before being scrapped in 1952 at the ancient age (for a ship) of 48! Surely this is one ship that earned her keep.
